5 myths about chemical peels we hear every day
Let's settle the chemical peel debate: what happens, what doesn't, and who's a real candidate.
Chemical peels are among the most misunderstood treatments. People imagine peeling skin like a burn, or a magical instant result — the truth is precisely between the two.
Myth 1: My skin must visibly peel for the treatment to work
False. Over 70% of peel results come from microscopic, invisible exfoliation. Visible flaking only happens at higher strengths and is usually unnecessary.
Myth 2: Peels thin the skin over time
The exact opposite. A well-managed peel stimulates collagen, which makes the skin thicker and stronger — never thinner.
Myth 3: One session is enough
Peel results compound. One session gives you a glow, but real results (brightening, smoother texture, finer lines) need 3-6 sessions spaced out.
Myth 4: Stronger is better than gentler
Never. Four gentle sessions over two months give a better, more stable result than one aggressive session — especially on sensitive or Egyptian skin.
Myth 5: No peels in summer
Not an absolute rule. Gentle peels (Mandelic, low Lactic) are safe in summer with strict sun protection. Only deeper peels (Jessner, mid-strength TCA) get postponed.
Most important: don't try a strong peel at home. The line between an effective concentration and a burn is very thin, and not worth the gamble.
